      Each vote is only $1.00.  All proceeds from votes benefit the animals of the Lee County Humane Society.  The pet with the most votes will be featured on the cover of the calendar and the month of their choice. The 10 pets with the next highest amount of votes will be featured as a pet of the month.  (One month will feature a "Best in Show" picture which will be selected by a local artist.)

Pet of the Week- "Tina"

 

LCHS Pet of the Week:  "Tina" is a young, long-hair, calico mix who's is in need of a good home.  "Tina" has been at the shelter longer than any of the other cats and is a "Star Pet" which means she has a discounted adoption processing fee.  Visit "Tina" and the other Star Pets at the Lee County Humane Society Tuesday-Sunday from 1:00-5:00 p.m.

 

Be a Woofstock 2010 Partner

One of my favorite Lee County Humane Society events is just around the corner. Our tenth annual Woofstock will be held on Saturday, September 11 at Kiesel Park in Auburn . It is known as “a day in the park with your dog.”

Woofstock is a family friendly event featuring music from local artists, a children’s fun area, pet merchandise vendors, canine demonstrations, a dog agility course, dog washes, animal adoptions and so much more. Woofstock is free to the community and is enjoyed by hundreds of people and their dogs every year.

We are looking for some partners to help us provide this great event for our community. If you are an individual or a business we welcome your help. There are three sponsorship tiers:

Gold Sponsorship- $1000 includes radio advertising, logo on the 2010 t-shirt and featured on all promotional Woofstock material and advertising, a feature story on our website mentioning the sponsorship, signage at the entry of the park, weekly mentions in our e-news, and a vendor booth at the event.

Silver Sponsorship- $750 includes logo on the 2010 t-shirt and all promotional Woofstock material, signage at the park, bi-monthly mentions in the e-news and a vendor booth at the event.

Bronze Sponsorship- $500 includes logo on the 2010 t-shirt and all promotional material and advertising, signage at the park and monthly mentions in the e-news.

This is a true win-win situation for the right business or individual. Depending on your situation, a portion of the sponsorship may be tax deductible and your support will go to benefit the shelter’s adoption programs fund. This fund sustains the shelter’s efforts to find homes for many of the more than 6000 animals that visit our facility each year.

Taking Your Pet to College

Camp War Eagle is Auburn University’s orientation for new college students and they just wrapped up their final session for the summer. All kinds of information is covered for both students and their parents during Camp War Eagle. It has changed a lot since I was an incoming freshman and from what I know it is a great program that has a positive impact on all the participants.

While I am sure the agenda includes some great speakers and information there is one topic I doubt they cover. Should you bring a pet to college?

I had a dog when I was a freshman. It wasn’t a pet that I brought from home, but a dog I adopted once I moved to Auburn. In hindsight maybe it wasn’t the best choice I have ever made, especially at a time in my life when good choices were not always a priority.

Before you or someone in your family decides to take a pet to college, consider these possible hurdles:

Do you have the time to commit to a pet? College life brings a whole new set of time commitments to a young adult. Late nights and early mornings can be common just like sleeping in late. Are you going to have a part time job? What about long hours in the library? Having a pet requires time not only for care but also companionship.

Do you have the space? Will your apartment be big enough for a dog. What about campus housing do they allow pets? Will you be on the third floor and have to walk your dog downstairs every time he needs to go out?

What about roommates? Do your roommates know you will be bringing a pet? Do you know they might be bringing a pet? If there is more than one pet in the apartment do they get along?

Can you afford a pet away from home? Pet care can be expensive. Not only is there the expense of food and regular veterinary care, what happens if your pet needs emergency care? Too often college students don’t realize how expensive caring for a pet can be because their parents took care of most of these expenses.

What happens when you go on spring break? Or for that matter a long weekend? Do you have friends who can care for a pet or will your parents be OK doing it? Boarding a pet can be expensive.

College can be an exciting time in the life of a young adult. Maybe including your cat or dog might not be the best idea at least for the first year. If you just can’t handle not having an animal to care for, consider a hamster, Guinea pig or maybe even a frog. While they still require a commitment it is much less than that of a dog or cat.

Donations of Leashes Needed

 

     The shelter is always in need of donations of leashes of all sizes and lengths.  Treat your dog to a new leash and donate the old one to the shelter.  We are open Tuesday-Sunday from 8:30 to 5:00 and on Monday from 8:30-2:30 p.m.  Thank you for your generosity.

 

New Executive Director at the Lee County Humane Society

The Lee County Humane Society has a new Executive Director and her name is Jessica Marable. Jessica comes to Lee County with an excitement to make changes in our community that will greatly impact animal welfare. She has always had a heart for animals and the people who care for them.

Jessica began her career in animal welfare by attending the Humane Society of the United States Taking Action for Animals Conference in Washington, D.C. in 2008.  As a recent college graduate, Jessica had a strong desire to become involved professionally with an organization that worked to make a difference in her community.  Her desire to make an impact in the world around her led her to the Shelby Humane Society in Columbiana, AL where she worked as the Spay/Neuter Programs Administrator.

Through Jessica’s efforts the Spay/Neuter program at Shelby Humane grew by over 50% in her first six months with the organization.  This growth was instrumental in the shelter being selected an American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Mission Orange Shelter.  As a Mission Orange shelter, Jessica and the other staff worked one-on-one with a consultant from the ASPCA to review, evaluate and develop the shelter’s policies and procedures to meet the communities needs.

    

During her time at Shelby Humane Society, Jessica was promoted to Programs Director where she oversaw the shelter’s Spay/Neuter programs, Adoption procedures, and Training and Learning Department which consisted of behavior and obedience enrichment for adopters.  The results of Jessica’s hard work were over 3,000 public spay/neuters and a 25% decrease in in-takes at the shelter.  

Jessica has been settling in for the last month and really seems to be a great fit for the shelter and it’s staff. She has the ability to see both the big picture as well as the daily challenges that pop up and must be handled immediately. 

Over the past few years she wisely has built an effective network of animal welfare professionals throughout the southeast that she can rely on for help, support and knowledge. This network will be a great asset as she moves forward in her career. 

Jessica is a great addition to the team at the Lee County Humane Society. As we move forward with the challenges that pet overpopulation brings, she is the right person to move us to the next level. Guided by the leadership of the Board of Directors, supported by the great staff she has in place and partnering with the local governments and citizens of Lee County we can only move forward in impacting animal welfare in our community.

Oh, and she is an Auburn graduate on top of everything else. I am excited to see what the future brings the Lee County Humane Society.

Brass Brassiere to hold Bottles and Brushes event for LCHS

       

 

     On Saturday, August 14 from 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. the Brass Brassiere will host a Bottles and Brushes fund-raising event for the Lee County Humane Society.  Participants will get to paint their choice from a number of designs by  artist Eloise.  Eloise Schneider  is a certified art instructor and award-winning local artist. Eloise is skilled at instructing multiple people who are each painting different designs and will be on-site to instruct and help each student.  The registration fee is $50.00 which includes wine, appetizers and all art supplies.  A portion from each registration fee will be donated to LCHS.  To register call: The Brass Brassiere at 749-6122.    What a wonderful way to have some fun and support LCHS!

Community Event for animal lovers: Owl Release

        Presented by the City of Auburn Parks and Rec. and The Southeaster Raptor Center of Auburn University College of Vet Medicine:

July 8

Kiesel Park

6:30 p.m.

    Bring a picnic to Kiesel Park and see barred and Eastern screech owls released into the wild. Most of the birds were healthy fledglings that were mistaken for orphans and brought to the Southeastern Raptor Center for rehabilitation. 

     An educational program at 6:30 p.m. focuses on the owls, fledglings, raptors, and features two red-tailed hawks.  The bird release follows at 7 p.m.

Be Pet Cautious on the Fourth

The Fourth of July brings fireworks, barbecue, family get-togethers and lots fun.  But too often it can become a tragic memory for many pet owners.  Here at the Lee County Humane Society we always have a busy day on the 5^th of July with people looking for their lost pets. 

Dogs and cats startled and scared from fireworks displays both big and small are a problem on Independence Day.  Dog owners have been known to take their pets to the community fireworks show only to have them run off when it starts.  Other pets are scared by small neighborhood firecrackers and bottle rockets.  But fireworks are not the only problem on the Fourth of July.

   

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) offers these holiday tips to help both you and your pet enjoy the festivities: 

• Do not apply any sunscreen or insect repellent product to your pet that is not labeled specifically for use on animals. Ingestion of sunscreen products can result in drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst and lethargy. The misuse of insect repellent that contains DEET can lead to neurological problems.
• Always keep matches and lighter fluid out of your pets’ reach. Certain types of matches, for example, contain chlorates, which could potentially damage blood cells and result in difficulty breathing.
• Keep your pets on their normal diet. Any change, even for one meal, can give them severe indigestion and diarrhea. And keep in mind that foods such as onions, chocolate, coffee, avocado, grapes & raisins, salt and yeast dough can all be potentially toxic to companion animals.
• Loud, crowded fireworks displays are no fun for pets, so please resist the urge to take them to Independence Day festivities. Instead, keep your little guys safe from the noise in a quiet, sheltered and escape-proof area at home.
• Do not put glow jewelry on your pets, or allow them to play with it. While the luminescent substance contained in these products is not highly toxic, excessive drooling and gastrointestinal irritation could still result from ingestions, and an intestinal blockage could occur from swallowing large pieces of the plastic container.
• Keep citronella candles, insect coils and oil products out of the reach of pets. Ingestions can produce stomach irritation and possibly even central nervous system depression, and if inhaled, the oils could potentially cause aspiration pneumonia as well.

 

While the Fourth of July holiday is the reason for these tips, they are good all year round.  Keep them in mind and you and your pets will stay safe and sound.
