LCHS Star Pets

LCHS Star Pets have been at the shelter longer than any other of the pets at the shelter.  Star Pets have a discounted adoption processing fee of $50.  Visit LCHS Star Pets Tuesday-Sunday from 1:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m.

 

"Paris" is a young Doberman Pinscher mix who loves company and is very friendly.

"Emilio" is a young, shepherd mix who's friendly and active.

"Milo" is a young black and white, long-hair mix who's cheerful and friendly.

"Elena" is a young  torbie, short hair mix who's kind and loving.

 

New Year's Resolutions

Resolutions for You and Your Pet 

     The New Year is just around the corner and of course with the New Year comes resolutions.  If you are a pet owner and you still have room for a few more resolutions, here are some suggestions that will hopefully bring a good year to both you and your pet. 

• Have your pet spayed or neutered- Companion animal sterilization is the best way to combat the pet overpopulation problem.  Not only does it help decrease the number of unwanted dogs and cats, but it is also a healthy choice for your pet.  If your pet is already altered, tell your friends and family to have their pets sterilized.
• Exercise with your pet- Walk your dog or play with you cat.  It is great for their health and for yours. And it is also a great stress reliever.
• Put a tag on your pet- Only about 1 percent of the animals arriving at the Lee County Humane Society have a valid identification tag.  Make sure you have at least the state mandated rabies tag on your pet’s collar whether it is a cat or a dog.  If you live in Auburn and own a dog you are required to have a city tag as well.   Consider having your pet implanted with a microchip or tattooed by your veterinarian.
• Visit your veterinarian on a regular basis- You have to go at least once a year for your pet’s rabies vaccine, but if your pet is getting older you might want to consider going more frequently.  Have you considered having dental cleaning done on your pet?
• Put your pet on a heartworm preventative- Heartworms are commonly found in dogs in the south and even in cats from time to time.  There are several types of heartworm preventative and most are very easy to administer.  Please consult your veterinarian about heartworms.
• Check your dog’s housing- If your dog is kept outside does he or she have a proper dog house?  It must have at least three sides and a roof to keep out the elements.  With the cold weather here you might want to consider buying a bale of hay to help keep your pet warm.
• Include your children in the process of caring for your pet- Start teaching your children the proper way to care for a companion animal at an early age.  As you know, they learn by what we do!
• Learn how to crate train your dog- Crate training is a great way to house train a new puppy and even an adult dog.  Done properly, your dog will want to go in to his or her crate to feel comfortable and safe.  There are many web sites that offer great crate training tips.
• Adopt from the Lee County Humane Society- If you are ready for a new companion, make sure you visit the Lee County Humane Society.  We have a variety of cats, kittens, dogs, puppies and even some rabbits and Guinea pigs.  Make sure you are ready and then come visit us!

    

     I hope 2010 will be a great year for you and your pet.  You might want to consider adopting a few of these resolutions to help make your new year even better.

No More Wasted Lives

Heather Meadows reached her goal of $24,000.00 in record time during the “No More Wasted Lives” campaign this past week.  As Executive Director of the Lee County Humane Society, her challenge was to stay in a dog pen next to Kroger until she met her goal.  She was in for a total of 30 hours. 

In typical style, the weather was not great during her stay in the pen. She was met with rain on Monday as she was ceremonially locked in the pen. The rain and general bad weather continued throughout the day on Tuesday. 

Also, in typical style, the community response was overwhelming both in donations as well as the show of support.  Heather talked about how many people brought their dogs by to visit or simply told stories about their pets at home. It was a great show of support from the Lee County community. 

So, what happens next?  The contributions made will go directly to help care for the lost and homeless animals at the shelter.  A large portion of our budget goes to staff payroll cost, which is very important.  These are the people who care for the animals each and every day.  They also provide assistance when people visit the shelter to adopt.

    

The balance of the donations are used for utilities, basic health care medications, pet food, educational material, spay and neuter surgeries and so much more.  With shelter operations costing $1350.00 per day, $24,000.00 will provide assistance for a little over two weeks.  Like most non-profit organizations there are always financial needs.  

If you were not able to contribute during Heather’s stay in the dog pen or if you still want to donate during 2009 there is plenty of time.  Here are a few things you can do:

• Mail a donation to the Lee County Humane Society at 1140 Ware Drive, Auburn, AL 36832
• Come by the humane society and visit the staff, check out the animals and drop off a check
• Bring some supplies to the shelter.  Here are a few things we need: dry dog food, dry cat food, bleach, towels in good condition, glass cleaner and cat litter.
• This year you can also donate through our web site at www.leecountyhumane.org.  The process is simple and secure.     

    

Another great way to help would be to volunteer.  Did you know the staff has to work on Christmas day?  If you think you have an extra hour or two call the shelter (821-3222) and talk with Heather.  She can tell you when to come by and how long they will be there on Christmas.  It is amazing how much faster the cleaning and feeding happens with more people.

No More Wasted Lives A Success

 

      Lee County Humane Society, Executive Director Heather Meadows braved the inclement weather on Monday & Tuesday as LCHS reached it fund-raising goal of $24,336 for the 2009 No More Wasted Lives Campaign.  The goal was met around 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon after Heather had been in the cage since noon on the day before.  

     The Lee County Humane Society would like to thank the entire Lee County Community for its generosity and support of this campaign.  Money raised at No More Wasted Lives will support the shelter's general operating fund which maintains the shelter animals' general health, welfare, and medical needs.

No More Wasted Lives

 

The Lee County Humane Society will hold the 14th Annual No More Wasted Lives Campaign begining Monday, Dec. 14 at noon at the Kroger on Dean Road parking lot.  Heather Meadows, Lee County Humane Society Executive Director, will remain locked in a dog kennel day and night until the fund-raising goal of more than $24,000 is reached.  No More Wasted Lives is LCHS’s largest fund-raiser of the year, and all proceeds from this campaign directly benefit the animals at the shelter.

The Lee County Humane Society cares for more than 6,000 animals each year.  The LCHS hopes to raise $4 for every animal that came through the shelter's doors from November 2008 to October 2009.  The LCHS provided services for 6,084 animals in 2009, and its goal is to raise $24,336 in honor and memory of these animals. 

The Lee County Humane Society invites the entire Lee County community to visit Heather and support the shelter by making a donation.  Holiday memorial cards will be available to send to loved ones acknowledging donations.  Donations to LCHS are tax-deductible, and all donors will receive a letter acknowledging their gift.

 

A Simple Wish

As many of you know the Lee County Humane Society is a private not for profit entity. From the Internal Revenue Service perspective we are a 501(c)(3) organization which means that monetary or in-kind donations are tax deductible. 

A percentage of our budget is funded through contracts with the three local governments; Auburn, Opelika and Lee County. This funding fulfills the requirement by the State of Alabama law that all counties have a holding facility for stray dogs and that all cities of more than 5000 people contribute to that facility or maintain their own facility. 

The portion of the funding provided by the governments covers almost 60% of our total budget. Since we are an open admission facility that accepts all animals from Lee County and the two cities, we welcome the funding from the governments. But, because we are an open admission facility, we average over 6000 animals arriving at our shelter annually. 

Due to the huge number of animals we care for, there is still a great portion of our budget left to raise each year.  One way we do this is through donations. So our simple wish is this… please consider donating to help us keep our costs down. Here is a list of things we need:

• Dry cat food
• Cat litter
• Dog treats
• Cat play toys
• Dog “Kongs”
• Peanut butter
• Shoe boxes
• Towels in good condition

Cleaning & Office Supplies:

• Bleach
• Pine cleaner
• Window cleaner
• Brooms
• Dust pans
• Copy paper
• Pens
• Washing machine
• Clothes dryer

Outdoors:

• Push lawn mower
• Bales of pine straw
• Gas powered blower
• Gas powered weed trimmer

 

This list highlights the most needed items. While it is not an exhaustive list, it is a great reference for anyone wishing to donate items the staff needs on a daily basis to help the animals. 

One more thing; we always need cash. Heather, Executive Director of the Lee County Humane Society, will begin our annual No More Wasted Lives Campaign at noon on Monday December 14.
