Volunteer Opportunities

Lee County Humane Society relies on the support of our volunteers. LCHS has two types of volunteer opportunities available at our shelter:

If you have been assigned court-ordered community service hours rather than volunteering your time, please register here.

If you are an Auburn University student fufilling required community service hours for a class or civic group, please allow time before you need to complete your hours to attend one of our orientation classes before your hours are due. We are often overwhlemed with help at the end of each semester. Our building is small, and the work we do requires some training and know how.

If you are fufilling required hours, a Shelter Helper or the Impact Program is the best match for you. If you are interested in volunteering on your own and becoming more involved with LCHS we hope you'll consider becoming a Core Volunteer.

Shelter Helpers

Shelter Helpers are our volunteers who visit the shelter during adoption hours to help our staff with many of their daily tasks to care for our pets. Some of the activities Shelter Helpers may assist with are:

  • Help walk dogs
  • Play with and socialize the dogs
  • Hand out treats
  • Socialize the cats
  • Giving baths, when needed
  • Help make sure water bowls are filled
  • And other tasks to help our team out

If you are interested in volunteering as a Shelter Helper, you will need to attend one of our Shelter Helper orientation classes on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month at 5:00 p.m. If this class time conflicts with your schedule, please email our Volunteer Coordinator at alisha@leecountyhumane.org to set up another time to go over the class material.

All Shelter Helpers will be required to wear an LCHS Volunteer t-shirt while volunteering so that we may easily identify our volunteers. These shirts are available at the shelter for only $5.

Our Shelter Helper Daily Schedule

Tuesday-Sunday 12:00-5:00 p.m.

  • 12:00-2:00 Walk Dogs
  • 12:00-3:00 Play with Cats
  • 3:00-4:00 Feed and Walk Dogs
  • 4:30-5:00 Help with Closing Assignments

If time sheets are needed for your volunteer hours, you can sign in on a volunteer hour log that is available at the shelter or bring your own, but please keep it with the person at the front desk.

Core Volunteers

Core volunteers have more liberties and responsibilitites at the shelter than Shelter Helpers. They also have more responsibility and are committed to volunteering a minimum of two hours a week at the shelter. Core volunteer responsibilities may include:

  • Help with fund-raising events (Wash-N-Wag, Mutt Strut, Woofstock, etc)

Core volunteers attend a mandantory orientation class to become familiar with what their responsibilities will be at the shelter. Core Volunteer orientations are held the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month at 6:00 p.m.

If this class time conflicts with your schedule, please email our Volunteer Coordinator at alisha@leecountyhumane.org to set up another time to go over the class material.
