Dog Enrichment Ideas!

Do you have a young puppy that demands your constant attention? Or even an older dog that has remained high energy through the years? Or what about a dog that loves to mouth on everything… including those expensive shoes you just bought last week?

Here at LCHS, we try so hard to come up with some enrichment activities to keep our dogs busy, to help them work their brain in healthy ways despite spending hours in their kennel! I would love to share some of our tips and tricks with you, so your dog can spend it’s time doing mentally enriching activities outside of begging for your attention and destroying your household items!

Kongs

According to chewy.com, “KONG toys are a favorite, whether for large dogs, small dogs or anything in between.” They are perfect for redirecting mouthiness to something appropriate.

You can fill these rubber toys up with peanut butter, nonfat yogurt, applesauce, and even KONG stuff’n sweet potato jam! To make it last longer, you can absolutely stick it in the freezer for a few hours. Please keep in mind that LCHS does not have a licensed vet on staff, so make sure to double check with your vet before giving your dog any sort of edible treats that aren’t advertised for dogs!

Snuffle Mats

Snuffle Mats are one of our favorite activities at LCHS! We are so lucky to have volunteers who have dedicated their time donating supplies and making these mats for our pups. You can make these at home, or purchase them off of amazon!
