Pets for Patriots

If you’re a United States military veteran interested in adding a furry companion to your family, we have the purrfect program for you! Pets for Patriots assists veterans in adopting a companion animal with multiple benefits, including a discounted adoption fee!

Lee County Humane Society has been partnering with Pets for Patriots for a few years now and we are so honored to have brought together homeless animals and veterans, thanks to this program.

Adoption is truly an amazing option, and according to the Pets for Patriots website, “When dogs or cats are adopted, they have won the lottery: a good home, a warm bed, toys, food, medical care, and love. They return that love unconditionally and without judgment, one of the main reasons people are drawn to companion pets in the first place.”

While bringing a new pet home is quite a serious decision, it can certainly be worth it if you and your family believe you are prepared for such a commitment. Getting a companion pet does help everyone in general, but military veterans do occasionally struggle with returning “to a life that they no longer recognize and feel disconnected even from close friends or family, while others struggle to translate their military skills into a civilian job.” according to petsforpatriots.org, so they may benefit from getting a new furry best friend even more so!

Getting a pet may be exactly what is needed to help in some situations, as the Pets for Patriots website also mentions that “among well-established physical benefits are lower cholesterol, blood pressure and triglyceride levels, while emotional impacts include fewer feelings of loneliness and depression.

If you are interested in applying for this program, you just need to submit an application through petsforpatriots.org. The pre-qualification application takes less than 5 minutes. If you qualify, you will be sent a link to complete the application and then submit your documentation.
